REAR AXLE BEAM (for Hatchback) > REMOVAL


CAUTION:
When the rear axle beam assembly is removed, the front to rear weight balance of the raised vehicle becomes unstable, creating the danger that the vehicle might fall. Therefore, before removing the rear axle beam assembly, securely support the front suspension cross member with a transmission jack or other suitable lift.


1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL


2. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID

NOTICE:
Immediately wash off any brake fluid that comes into contact with any painted surfaces.


3. SEPARATE SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE LH (w/ ABS)

  1. Using a screwdriver, disengage the claw of the connector lock portion and disconnect the skid control sensor wire LH connector.

    NOTICE:
    Do not remove the connector cover from the connector because the skid control sensor wire may be damaged.

  1. Remove the nut and separate the skid control sensor wire LH.



4. SEPARATE SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE RH (w/ ABS)

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the RH side as for the LH side.


5. SEPARATE NO. 4 REAR BRAKE TUBE (for Rear Drum Brake)

  1. Using a union nut wrench 10 mm, separate the No. 4 rear brake tube while holding the rear flexible hose LH with a wrench.

    NOTICE:
    1. Do not bend or damage the brake line.
    2. Do not allow any foreign matter such as dirt and dust to enter the brake line from the connecting points.
  1. Remove the clip and separate the rear flexible hose LH from the rear axle beam assembly.

  1. Remove the nut and separate the No. 4 rear brake tube.



6. SEPARATE NO. 3 REAR BRAKE TUBE (for Rear Drum Brake)

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the No. 4 rear brake tube.


7. SEPARATE NO. 4 REAR BRAKE TUBE (for Rear Disc Brake)

  1. Using a union nut wrench 10 mm, separate the No. 4 rear brake tube while holding the rear flexible hose LH with a wrench.

    NOTICE:
    1. Do not bend or damage the brake line.
    2. Do not allow any foreign matter such as dirt and dust to enter the brake line from the connecting points.
  1. Remove the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 rear flexible hoses LH from the rear axle beam assembly.

  1. Remove the nut and separate the No. 4 rear brake tube.



8. SEPARATE NO. 3 REAR BRAKE TUBE (for Rear Disc Brake)

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the No. 4 rear brake tube.


9. SEPARATE NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the cable clamp from the rear axle beam assembly.

  1. Remove the bolt and separate the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.

  1. Remove the cable clamp from the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.

    HINT:
    Replace the clamp with a new one when installing the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.


10. SEPARATE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.


11. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY (for Rear Drum Brake)
  1. Release the parking brake and remove the rear brake drum.
    If the rear brake drum cannot be removed easily, perform the following procedure.

  1. Remove the hole plug and insert a screwdriver through the hole into the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjust lever away from the adjuster.

  1. Using another screwdriver, contract the brake shoe by turning the adjusting bolt.



12. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH (for Rear Disc Brake)

  1. Hold the rear disc brake pad guide pin and remove the 2 bolts and the rear disc brake cylinder assembly.



13. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY RH (for Rear Disc Brake)

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the RH side as for the LH side.


14. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE PAD (for Rear Disc Brake)

  1. Remove the 2 disc brake pads from the rear disc brake cylinder mounting.



15. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER MOUNTING LH (for Rear Disc Brake)

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and the rear disc brake cylinder mounting from the axle beam.



16. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER MOUNTING RH (for Rear Disc Brake)

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the RH side as for the LH side.


17. REMOVE REAR DISC (for Rear Disc Brake)

  1. Place matchmarks on the rear disc and axle hub, and remove the rear disc.

18. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for Rear Drum Brake)

  1. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the axle hub and bearing from the axle beam.



19. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for Rear Disc Brake)

  1. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the axle hub and bearing and the dust cover from the axle beam.



20. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEAM DYNAMIC DAMPER LH (w/ Dynamic Damper)

  1. Remove the bolt and the rear axle beam dynamic damper LH from the rear axle beam assembly.



21. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEAM DYNAMIC DAMPER RH (w/ Dynamic Damper)

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the RH side as for the LH side.


22. LOOSEN REAR AXLE BEAM ASSEMBLY

  1. Loosen the 2 bolts.

23. REMOVE REAR COIL SPRING LH


  1. Support the spring seat of the rear axle beam assembly using 2 jacks and 2 wooden blocks.

  1. Remove the 2 bolts while holding the 2 nuts and separate the rear axle beam assembly from the rear shock absorber assemblies LH and RH.

    NOTICE:
    Since a jam nut is used, turn the bolt.
  1. Slowly lower the rear axle beam assembly using 2 jacks and 2 wooden blocks.

  1. Remove the rear coil spring LH, rear upper coil spring insulator LH and the rear lower coil spring insulator LH.

  1. Slowly jack up the rear axle beam assembly using 2 jacks and 2 wooden blocks, and temporarily tighten the rear axle beam assembly to the rear shock absorber assemblies LH and RH with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.

    NOTICE:
    Since a jam nut is used, turn the bolt.


24. REMOVE REAR COIL SPRING RH

HINT:
Use the same procedure for the RH side as for the LH side.


25. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEAM ASSEMBLY


  1. Support the rear axle beam assembly with an engine lifter using 2 wooden blocks and the 2 attachments or equivalent tools as shown in the illustration.

    NOTICE:
    Make sure to secure the rear axle beam assembly to prevent it from dropping.
  1. Remove the 2 A bolts and 2 nuts while holding the 2 nuts and separate the rear axle beam assembly from the rear shock absorber assemblies LH and RH.

    NOTICE:
    Since a jam nut is used, turn the bolt.
  1. Remove the 2 B bolts and the rear axle beam assembly from the body.
