DTC    P0617    Starter Relay Circuit High

for Preparation Click here

DESCRIPTION

While the engine is being cranked, battery voltage is applied to terminal STA of the ECM.
If the ECM detects the starter signal (STA signal) while the vehicle is being driven, it determines that there is a malfunction in the STA circuit. The ECM then illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC.
This monitor runs when the vehicle is driven at 12.43 mph (20 km/h) or more for over 20 seconds.

DTC No.
DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
P0617
When conditions (a), (b) and (c) are met, positive (+B) battery voltage 10.5 V or more applied to ECM for 20 seconds (1 trip detection logic):
  1. (a) Vehicle speed 12.43 mph (20 km/h) or more
  2. (b) Engine speed 1000 rpm or more
  3. (c) STA signal ON
  1. Park/neutral position switch*
  2. Starter signal circuit
  3. ECM
  1. *: Automatic transaxle models.

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation) (Click here).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Idle the engine for 5 seconds or more [B].
  7. Drive the vehicle at 15 mph (24 km/h) or more for 20 seconds or more [C].

    CAUTION:
When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
  8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [D].
  9. Read the pending DTCs.

    HINT:
    1. If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
    2. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  11. Input the DTC: P0617.
  12. Check the DTC judgment result.

    Techstream Display
    Description
    NORMAL
    1. DTC judgment completed
    2. System normal
    ABNORMAL
    1. DTC judgment completed
    2. System abnormal
    INCOMPLETE
    1. DTC judgment not completed
    2. Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions
    N/A
    1. Unable to perform DTC judgment
    2. Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit

    HINT:
    1. If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
    2. If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
  13. If the judgment result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs (Click here).

    HINT:
    1. If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
    2. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the Techstream on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Starter Signal.

  1. Read the value displayed on the Techstream when the vehicle is driven at 12 mph (20 km/h) or more.

    CAUTION:
When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
